What Do the Transaction Types Mean?

For InvestorsBy Syndelo

What each line on an investment's Transactions tab means, and why an amount can be negative.

Open an investment from My Investments and choose Transactions. Each row shows the Date, Investing Account, Activity, and Amount your sponsor recorded in the investment's books.

What Each Activity Means

  • Payment In: money you paid into the investment.
  • Payout: money paid out to you.
  • Capital Returned: part of what you invested was paid back.
  • Principal Returned: part of a loan or note was paid back.
  • Interest: interest paid on a loan or note.
  • Reinvested Payout: a payout was put back into the investment instead of paid to you.
  • Unit Purchase: you bought fund units.
  • Cash-Out: you sold fund units.
  • Tax Held Back: tax withheld from a payout.
  • Deduction: another amount taken out of a payout.
  • Management Fee: a fee the investment charged.
  • Sponsor Profit Share: the part of the profits that goes to your sponsor.
  • Transfer In and Transfer Out: ownership moved to or from this account.
  • Reversal: an earlier entry was undone, for example a payment that came back.

Negative Amounts

A negative amount is usually capital returned to you or an amount held back. A Transfer Out or Reversal can also be negative. It doesn't mean you owe money.

Filter and Download

  • Choose All, Payments In, Payouts, or Other. Filters only appear when you have that kind of transaction. A filter shows the count and total.
  • Choose Download Transactions for an Excel file.

Good to Know

  • Only recorded transactions are listed. Payments still on their way are under Payments in Progress at the top of the tab.
  • If the tab is missing, your sponsor doesn't share payment activity. See Why Does a Portal Page Say It Is Not Shared?
  • These are your sponsor's records, not tax figures. Your K-1 or 1099 is the tax record.
