Why Was My File Upload Rejected?

Uploads are rejected when the file type or size is not allowed, or when the security scanner flags or cannot check the file. The error message tells you which.

Common limits

• Application documents and accreditation letters: PDF, JPG, or PNG, up to 10 MB.
• Representative authority documents: PDF, JPG, or PNG, up to 10 MB.
• Signed tax forms (such as a W-9): PDF only, up to 20 MB.
• Profile photo: JPG, PNG, or WebP, up to 2 MB and 2,400 × 2,400 pixels.
• Sponsor K-1s and 1099s: one PDF per document, up to 20 MB each, 50 files per upload and 1,000 per batch.
• Signing templates: PDF, DOC, or DOCX, up to 20 MB.
• Import files: CSV or Excel (.xlsx), up to 10 MB and 5,000 rows. A data move also takes a zip of exports and files.

Scanner messages

• "This file was rejected by the security scanner." The file looked unsafe. Do not try again with the same file. Get a clean copy from the original source.
• "The file could not be scanned. Please try again later." A temporary problem. Wait and try again.
• "Secure uploads are unavailable until the malware scanner is configured." Uploads are off on this server. Contact support.

Fixes

1. Save or export the file as PDF if PDF is required.
2. Make it smaller: compress the PDF, or lower the image resolution.
3. Make sure the file extension matches the real file type. A renamed file can be rejected.
4. Split large packets into separate files.

Good to know

• Some uploads are rate-limited. If you upload many files quickly, wait a minute and try again.
• If a limit above does not match what you see, follow the hint shown under the upload field.
