How Do I Import Investors and Historical Data?

For SponsorsBy Syndelo

Explains how to move investors, accounts, deals, pledges, financial history and files into Syndelo from CSV or Excel exports.

There are two ways in, both under Settings > Import Data:

  • Move Your Data In takes every export from your old platform at once, sorts the files, checks them together and imports them in the right order. Use it when you are switching platforms.
  • Import Data imports one file at a time.

Importing does not send login invitations, money or notices.

Move everything at once

  1. Open Move Your Data In.
  2. Under Moving From, choose your old platform: Spreadsheet, Juniper Square, AppFolio Investment Manager, SyndicationPro, Cash Flow Portal, InvestNext or Other.
  3. Choose every export, or one zip of them. CSV and Excel (.xlsx) files work, plus PDFs and other files such as K-1s and agreements. Click Upload & Sort Files.
  4. Check the type Syndelo picked for each file. Change a Type if it is wrong, use Match Columns to fix a column, or Leave Out a file you don't need.
  5. Click Check Every File. Files are checked in this order: investments, classes, contacts, accounts, pledges, money, then files, so later files can refer to records from earlier ones. Nothing is saved yet.
  6. Fix any rows listed under Rows to Fix and Check, then check again.
  7. Click Import Everything. Every file is imported in one step.
  8. Check your starting balances. See How Do I Check Imported Starting Balances?

Files you add without a spreadsheet listing them are imported as team-only files. Share them later from Documents.

Import one file

  1. Under What Would You Like To Import?, choose the record type.
  2. Under Moving From, choose your old platform. Use the same platform for every file from it, so Syndelo links records and skips rows you already imported.
  3. Click Download Template if you want a Syndelo template.
  4. Choose a CSV or Excel file, up to 5,000 rows and 10 MB. For a workbook with several sheets, choose the Sheet after uploading.
  5. Click Upload & Map Columns. Syndelo matches columns from the usual export names for your platform, or the way you matched them last time. These matches are a best guess, so check each one.
  6. Click Validate & Preview and review the results. Rows marked To Check were read with a guess, such as a date that could be month first or day first.
  7. Click the import button (for example, Import 120 Records). Importing adds records. It does not replace records already saved.

What files can contain

  • Amounts can include $, commas and parentheses for negatives, such as $1,250.00.
  • Dates can be 2024-03-31, 3/31/2024, 3/31/24, March 31, 2024 or an Excel date. Pick Day Before Month under a date column if your file is day first.
  • Account types can use common names such as IRA, Self-Directed IRA, Roth IRA, JTWROS, Joint, Living Trust, LLC or S-Corp. With no type column, the type is read from the account name, or set to individual.
  • Names in one column can be split with First Name From a Full Name and Last Name From a Full Name.
  • Contacts don't need an email. Without one, Syndelo matches existing contacts by name and phone.
  • Accounts that already exist with the same name are linked, not duplicated. Link an account to its person by email, the original contact ID, or the person's name.
  • Investments and Classes files create the deals and share classes that don't exist yet, and link the ones that do.
  • Pledges can include add-on amounts for the same account and investment, each with its own date or ID.
  • Payouts use one row per investor. Rows for the same investment, date and payout name become one payout.
  • Files: drop every file at once. Each one is matched to the row whose file name or source file ID matches its name. Files no row uses are listed before you import.

Match columns with AI

Click Match Columns With AI to have Syndelo read your headers and a few sample rows and suggest the record type and column matches. If one sheet holds investors, accounts, pledges and payments together, it offers Split Into Separate Imports, which turns it into a data move you review in one place. Suggestions only fill in the form: every row is still checked before anything is imported.

Money, file, investment and class imports

Imports of money records change balances and reports. They do not send money, ask for signatures, or send notices, and all payments must already have cleared. Money, file, investment and class imports need a second person on your team to check and complete them. If you're the only person in the workspace who can approve, you can complete your own after confirming your password and an emailed code.

Recent imports

The Recent Imports list shows up to 50 recent batches, with unfinished drafts first, so you can resume a draft.

Syndelo is in preview. eSign and investor payments require live provider setup; a demo or sandbox action does not complete a live transaction. Confirm availability for your workspace before relying on either.
