How Do I Read Investor Performance (DPI, TVPI, XIRR)?

For SponsorsBy Syndelo

What the Performance tab shows, how each metric is calculated, and why a result may show a dash.

The Performance tab on Reporting shows each investing account's returns in each investment, from January 1 of the year through the As Of date you choose.

Steps

  1. Go to Reporting and open Performance.
  2. Pick the As Of date.
  3. Read the columns: Paid In, Distributed, Ending Capital, Valuation, DPI, RVPI, TVPI, XIRR, and Cash-on-Cash.
  4. To add a value, click Set Valuation, enter the Account Value (USD) and Valuation Basis / Note, and click Save Valuation.
  5. Expand Metric Definitions for the exact formulas.

What the metrics mean

  • DPI: payouts received (including funds reinvested) divided by money paid in.
  • RVPI: value still held on the end date divided by money paid in.
  • TVPI: DPI plus RVPI. Also called the equity multiple.
  • XIRR: a yearly rate based on the dates money moved and the value held at the end.
  • Cash-on-Cash: cash income for the period divided by average daily capital. It is not annualized and excludes returned capital, reinvested funds, tax withheld, and fees.

Why a result shows a dash

  • RVPI, TVPI, and XIRR need a valuation on the exact As Of date. Not Provided means none is saved for that date.
  • Missing transfer values or unusual cash flows can prevent XIRR.
  • Cash-on-Cash shows a reason under the dash when it cannot be calculated.

Good to know

  • Figures are after fund payout rules and before personal withholding.
  • These are capital records, not tax records.
  • Setting a valuation requires permission to prepare financial records.
